Excerpt – Loving the Legend

Andrew Lucan’s shoes lightly hit the pavement as he ran. He didn’t make a sound or leave a trail to follow. After years of practice, he was invisible to the world around him. All night humans had to be stealthy, but Andrew was better than most. He had to be. There was no way his uncle would let him out of the house; stealth was Andrew’s only option for freedom. And now was the time. He had it all planned. Every last detail was lining up. His home life had stunk long enough. He needed to get away now. With his seventeenth birthday only weeks away, Andrew was sure it was the perfect time to leave the Baku forever.

Starting over would be hard, BUT Andrew was up to the task. He was old enough that he could pretend to be an adult, and smart enough to no get caught … hopefully.

Andrew turned down a side street and kept his pace steady. He didn’t worry or send any thoughts to the night human Baku in the houses he passed. Baku were especially sensitive to feelings. If Andrew felt worry or fear, anxious or happy, they would know. Andrew had attempted to leave many times and each time knew that it was his feelings that alerted people to his presence. But not today. He was going about it a different way. There would be no celebrating and relief at the end of the block.

He would have to actually tread carefully as he entered neutral territory, and freedom from the night human world. Night humans lived amongst the day humans, and he still needed to be cautious even in neutral territory. Neutral didn’t mean lack of night humans, just lack of who controlled it.
