Ramblings…..books as movies

For the most part I have always been disappointed when they make books into movies. I actually didn’t read Harry Potter until I saw the movie and maybe that is better. See the movie first and then read the book. If you read the book first, you have ideas and characters in your own minds and nothing Hollywood can do will live up to it. Also there is always the CG affects that take away from the story- not done the best because most of what I read is fantasy and not realistically possible.

I have seen all the Harry Potter movies and thought they did a good job of portraying the books (even if I did read a review that complained they were too close to the book?? Isn’t that why you make a movie from a book??!!) We tried watching the Hunger Games and didn’t even finish it. It was so much slower pace that I felt the book was. I saw the Twilight movies after reading the books- I found the books okay but did not like the movies. Something’s are just better in my imagination than in CG: werewolves being one of them. The Golden Compass was okay as a movie but still much better as a book. I’ve seen two different movie versions of the Chronicles of Narnia and they will never live up to my childhood imagination. Maybe the secret is see the movie before reading the book. I saw the Lord of the Rings before reading it, and liked the movie. Same with Harry Potter, it made me go want to read all the books of the series.

I will try and try again to see movies based on books and am looking forward to Divergent. A few more I’ve read this past year I think would make good movies and the big books I imagine will happen eventually, but will they live up to my imagination…… guess I’ll have to wait and see.

I’ve been thinking the same thing lately. I watched the hunger games movie before reading the book and I really liked it, so I decided to read the trilogy, which I loved except for Mockingjay (many people liked it, though) and after that I watched the movie again and I felt rather dissapointed and I couldn’t understand why had I liked the movie when I first watched it. I suppose you are right, when we read a book we learn so much about the characters and the story and therefor expect too much.

I am hoping Divergent will do a good job. I liked the books so far. Guess I’ll have to wait and see (and more than likely be disappointed, but I am an eternal optimist……)
