Review: Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Review:  Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Katsu is graced with killing. A bit of an odd grace for a woman but one that shaped her into the character she was-not what she could become. On an undercover rescue mission, Katsu meets Po, and man graced with fighting. He finally meets his match. Along their adventure to find out why his grandfather was kidnapped, he teaches her more about herself than she could ever have guessed.

Out of all the books I have read thus far, this was the catchiest opening. From the start, you jumped into the action and told only bits of the world, enough to take a breath and continue on with the action. It was a great opening to keep the reader interested from the first page. While there were a couple “suddenly she understands” moments that were a bit awkward to read, the author did a great job of showing the growth of both Katsu and Po. Katsu changed greatly through the novel but the progression was well thought through and fit completely with the story line.

This was a great book and I enjoyed the adventure.

Graceling was such an adventure. Katsa, Po and Bitterblue reappear in Bitterblue, which is one of my favourite YA novels of 2012.

Fire doesn’t feature them, but it does give us an idea of Bitterblue’s father and what the evil king was like as a child. Although it’s a Graceling novel it actually features on one of the kingdoms that the seven realms of Katsa’s world believe to be a place of myth. I really enjoyed it. I started of reading it and had to return my library copy, so ended up buying the audiobook from Audible, and I found that I enjoyed it even more…great narrator I guess 🙂
